Event: BC Superfriends' Pride Menu 2013

If you're stalking us on Twitter and/or Facebook, you know that we're very excited about a new group that just popped up in our neck of the woods. BC Superfriends is a LGBT and Allies group that aim to host super geeky inclusive events in and around Vancouver. Their goal is to create a safe space for everyone to be their nerdy selves, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Seriously, these peeps are amazing.

Their first event takes place on August 4th, where they'll be cosplaying in the Pride Parade. Afterwards, we'll all be meeting at Rainbow's End, a Queer Geek After-Pride Party that will seriously rock the house. The BC Superfriends have just begun to spread their super fantastic glittery wings, which means they need a little help to start up the fabulousness. That's why they've got an IndieGoGo on the go - check it out, donate what you can. We're baking up some special edition Pride cupcakes for anyone who pledges $30, so make sure you go and do that.

Speaking of Pride and baked goods, we've been busy developing a BC Superfriends menu. If you're going to Rainbow's End, you can order from the list below and all the treats will meet you there on August 4th. If you're not going to Rainbow's End, but you still want some amazing baked goods, you can still order from the menu and the treats will be delivered right to you (as long as, you know, you're in the Greater Vancouver area). All orders need to be in by July 31st!

Have a gander at the menu, and remember that all proceeds will be going straight to the BC Superfriends. If you'd like to order, or if you have a question, please email us at cccakery@gmail.com.

San Diego Comic Con Cake

I got my Con cherry popped not too long ago by Emerald City. It wasn't planned - I hadn't thought about going at all. One day, however, two of my best buds mentioned that they was taking their comic on the road to Seattle.

"Boy," said Mr. C, "it would be cool to go down and hang out with them."

"Yeah," I said, "and, like, cosplay and stuff."

We laughed. And then looked at each other with intensity. It dawned on us. This was our chance to finally see what all the fuss was about. I'm pretty sure I didn't sleep well for months after that - All I could do was think about finally going to my first convention. What would it be like? Would it really smell like BO and regret? Would I get to talk to someone famous? Would I spend all my money on Booster Gold figurines? Would my very first cosplay end up in pieces on the vendor floor? SO MANY QUESTIONS.

C&C Event: VCON 37

Our oven has been pretty bare lately. Because Mr. C and I have gotten pretty heavy into weight lifting (pun intended), we have very little room for carbs and sugars. Yes, we've baked the odd protein cookie (filled with whey and avocado - not something I would recommend for those of you who are used to your red velvets and whoopie pies), but I haven't had the will power to mix up anything that isn't fuel for my squats and deadlifts.

I will, however, always fire up the kitchen when the geeks come a-callin'. Especially when charity is involved. Forget silly birthday cupcakes or wedding cakes. This is what we truly love to do. So, without futher ado, we'd like to announce that C&C will indeed be back for VCON 37:

We'll be bringing in some long time favourites (Hogwarts Confections, Browncoat Bars), as well as new recipes (Walking Dead Cupcakes, Wookie Cookies). We'll be loading in for Sunday, September 30th at the Sheraton Guildford Hotel (in Surrey). Check out the VCON website for more deets.

I'll make sure we update with all our nerdy treats. Now that we've taken some time to sit down and reflect, I've got to tell you, this is really what we love to do. No matter how busy we are, we will always make time for the amazing nerd and geek community that we've become a part of. Even if we're not baking for ourselves, we'll always bake for you.

If you would like use to bake for your geeky charity event, just drop us an email and I'll plug you into our calender!

The 2011 Movember Manly Cupcake Contest

Last year, around this time, something magical started. It involved frosting and whiskers. And it was glorious.

This year, we hope to keep the tradition of Movember alive and kicking. Prostate Cancer occurs in every 1 in 6 men in Canada, but it receives less than half the research funds that are available to Breast Cancer. The pink ribbons and reminders about mammograms and pap smears are everywhere, but when's the last time you've seen a parade encouraging men to get tested for testicular cancer? Let's face it: Men are men. They have a hard time talking about their assholes and balls in public. It's time to do something about it.

The Movember foundation, started in 2003, encourages men of all shapes and sizes (as well as their female counterparts) to grow the most manly mustache they can muster. Through this act, men and their supporters will ban together to raise money and awareness for all types of male health problems. Hopefully, in years to come, prostate and testicular cancer will be talked about freely, and funding for these men health issues will start to really flow.

C&C Cakery want to continue to show their support by hosting . . .

Calling All Nerds!

Have you ever argued over friends over who was the best Doctor? (Totally Number Ten) - Do still cry over the loss of Ned Stark? Are their more 'graphic novels' on your book shelf than actual books? Boy, do I have a event for you!

Since '71, Vancouver's own Sci-Fi and Fantasy convention has been spreading joy throughout the land of nerds. This year, we'll be joining them with a giant table full of incredible baked goods. Not only are these treats tasty, but they will for sure impress even the most stuck up of comic book guys. As a total bonus, all our proceeds are going to Aunt Leah's Youth Program, which support foster kids and mother's in need. We'll be in the Hospitality Suite on Sunday, from 10am until 5:30pm (or until we sell out!) at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport. You gotta check out what we're dragging along with us:

Tribble Truffles
Starks on a Stick
Bad Wolf Brownies
Browncoat Bars
Sonic Shortbread
Buffy Bites
(Blue) Milk and Cookies Cupcakes

I really hope you come and visit. If you do, make sure you tweet, blog, and take lots of pictures!

C&C does the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre

As you can see, this little bit of the blogosphere has been left empty for the past while. Not completely abandoned, no. I thought of your beautiful faces all week. But there was something that was seriously preoccupying our time. Don't worry, it was something important. And very very nerdy.

Can't Stop the Serenity is a charity event that supports Equality Now - an organization which works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world. I talked about this event last year, but this year we got our hands (and stomachs) right into the thick of things. The beautiful organizers here in Vancouver allowed us to come along and bombard them with a whole table full of treats. Every single cent that we earned went to both Equality Now and the BC Women's Hospital. And, boy did we get to donate a lot - but we'll get to that later. First, the treats:

Tri-Cities Baker's Market

People always ask me what I do to get my body rockin' hard and ready for summer. Okay, they really don't ask me that. But, if they did, I would tell them three things:

Run.

Lift weights.

Eat sweets.

It's as easy as that. Do those three things, and I guarantee you'll be rocking that gold Snookie bikini on Kits Beach in no time (results not actually guaranteed. Duh). For the running, I'd recommend C25K. For the lifting, I'd recommend Cross Fit. For the sweets, I'd recommend the Tri-Cities Baker's Market.

If you've never been to a baker's market, you're truly missing out on one of those rare opportunities to stuff your face full of a variety of from-scratch treats that are baked with nothing but love (and a bit of sugar). The one that is popping up in Coquitlam is a real gem - it is chock-a-block full of amazing bakers who only want to make your tummy happy. My posse and I got the opportunity to visit the first market of the year on Saturday. You've got to see what we smuggled out:

C&C does Yaletown

We are still running on adrenaline. For those of you who were at Bake for the Quake on Wednesday night,  you know exactly how we feel. That night, over 650 piled into Yaletown Roundhouse, creating a line up that was at least a half an hour long. Meanwhile, the bakers inside were going full tilt, constantly serving up tons of yummy confections so that they may please the masses. And please the masses they did.

It was all a rush, really. I'm pretty sure I blacked out halfway through. The line of people at our table was never-ending. Mr. C and I were dancing around constantly, trying to stuff cookies, cupcakes, and pie into everyone's faces tupperware. In the end, our table was able to raise just under $300 for Doctors without borders. Pretty neat, huh?

There were a downside to the constant busyness: We didn't get to leave our table at all. Which meant we couldn't taste anyone else's goods, nor could we take pictures. Luckily for us (and for you!), the amazing Tomasz Wagner was there to capture the greatness.

Please note: these are not our photos! They are taken by Tomasz Wagner! We are picking a few of our favourites to share with you - you can find the whole roll on Tomasz's site.

This is the manly hand of Mr. C, showcasing our Vegan Cupcake Kebab - Lime & Coconut, Chili Chocolate, and Ube with Mexican Vanilla. Aw yeah.

Online Bake Sale For Japan: Matcha and Wasabi Chocolate Truffles

JapanTruffles (4)

Living on the Pacific Ocean comes with some problems. We sit on the Ring of Fire, which means earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are a pretty real and constant threat. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we've been super lucky thus far - the last volcano that's blown it's top was St. Helens in 1980. The largest earthquake I've felt since I've lived here was the Seattle 6.8 in 2001 (I remember sitting in school and hearing that one rolling in before it even hit us). Besides those two big blunders, we've been lucky not to be hit with a large natural disaster around a big city in a while. I could not imagine what would happen if Vancouver was in the same situation that the Tōhoku region of Japan is in right now.

Because we sit in the same Pacific Rim danger zone as Japan, a lot of us here in BC feel connected to the disaster. Sure, the province has practiced what to do in an emergency situation, but that doesn't mean we're ready. Surviving a major earthquake is hard - surviving the aftermath is downright life-altering. What really comforts me is that, no matter where the disaster happens, the rest of the world always go out of their way to help. The Canadian Red Cross collected $6 million dollars from citizens so far for Japanese relief aid - and that doesn't include the millions that have been given by private donations. We've donated, but it doesn't seem enough for our Pacific Rim brethren. This is why C&C decided to join the Online Bake Sale for Japan set up by wonderful blog, The Tomato Tart.

Cthulhupalooza II: Son of Cthulhupalooza

You may have figured it out by now, but we're real big nerds. While you guys are out at the park, having a jolly old picnic with your families, we're huddled in a basement, playing D&D while consuming superhuman amounts of Cheetos and Mountain Dew. That's just how we roll. We love hanging out with other nerds, chatting about the latest Deadpool comic or the new World of Warcraft expansion. Lucky enough for us, there's a group that organizes geeky get together in Vancouver.

They're named Second Level Wizards. And they're totally our heroes.

Last Friday, we were able to bake for one of their amazing events, Cthulhupalooza II. Yes, this was the inspiration for our latest terrifying creation. Our cupcakes were along side some amazingly nerdy baked goods that I just had to share with you:

C&C does the 2nd Annual Cupcake Throwdown

Somewhere down The Drive exists a magical place. On any other normal day, it's Cafe Deux Soleils; a wonderful little vegetarian joint that does one hell of a good brunch. But, once a year, it transforms into something amazing. Fifteen bakers join forces to create a haven for cake and frosting. Though these young pastry chefs have grand powers that are immeasurable to mankind, they would never use such things for evil. No, on that night, they use them for pure good. United, the bakers would call on the masses to raise funds for an great local charity - the H.A.V.E. Cafe. In return for the crowd's generosity, the bakers gave them a taste of pure happiness.

In cupcake form.

Throwdown (7)

Though we didn't show up in tights and capes (though I totally wanted to), Mr. C and I were very happy to be part of such an great charity event. We got free reign to bake up anything our little hearts desire to share with the public. Plus, we got to taste some absolutely gobstopping treats from a dozen other bakers.

Now pictures to make you jealous:
