Game of Thrones: Sansa's Lemoncakes

If you have connected with us on facebook, twitter, or tumblr, you know what we've been up to for the last couple months. For the rest of you who have been waiting patiently, today's the day it will all be revealed to you. Aren't you excited?

Emerald City Comic Con took place at the end of March. Months beforehand, Colin and I were prepping and sewing and moulding and sanding and painting. Out of all of that chaos, some pretty cool costumes came out of it. Like, some totally kickin' rad ones.

Today I'm not going to talk about our costumes, however. Today, I want to talk about another group whose costumes brought tears to my eyes. You may think that's a hyperbole, but, man, you have no idea. When these guys walked across on stage at the cosplay masquerade, you could hear the room's collective jaws hit the floor.

Now, this small photo I took shows only 9 of them. I believe there were roughly fifteen. They could barely fit on the stage. The most amazing part is that each costume was absolutely stunning. No shortcuts were taken with any of them. They even had tiny Bran, in full northern leather armour. Out of all of the characters they represented, however, the one I fell in love with the most was the Sansa:

The amount of fabric, love, (and probably tears), and embroidery that went into that thing was incredible. As the only member of the real Game of Thrones crew who doesn't back-stab, murder, and fuck her way through the plot,  Sansa's become my top pick when it comes to inheriting Westeros. But what do I know? I don't have the guts to read the books.

If you're a fan of Game of Thrones, and amazing costumes, check out this groups facebook page: Ice and Fire Cosplay. The Sansa above is the lovely Seattle Cosplay, the picture is taken by SharcTank.

In order to celebrate the new season of Game of Thrones, here's one of my favourite recipes from that universe. It's light and sweet, a little delicate, but also a little dangerous (especially if you eat too many of them). There are many recipes for Sansa's favourite treat out there, but this is the one I think is the closest you can get to cannon. It takes some patience and finagling (it took me a couple tries before they came out perfect), but the result is worth a little bit of effort. I mean, come one, one does not simple take over an entire kingdom in a day anyways.

Sansa's Lemoncakes
makes four, 7oz cakes
recipe adapted from Tom Colicchio's Game of Thrones foodtruck

2 eggs (separated)
2/3 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 Tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/2 Tablespoons lemon zest
3 Tablespoons + 1 teaspoon flour
1/2 cup sugar

1) Preheat your oven to 300F. Butter four 7oz ramekins and dust them with sugar. Whip your egg whites into soft peaks and set aside.

2)  Using your mixer, whip the egg yolks for a bit, then slowly add the buttermilk, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Continue mixing and sift it the sugar, than the flour. Fold in your egg whites, then divide the batter between your ramekins.

3) Set your ramekins in a water bath, cover with aluminum foil, and let bake for about 27-30 minutes, until your cakes spring back when touched. Take off the aluminum foil, and let cook for another 15 minutes more, so the tops get a bit golden. When finished, let cool for a bit before running a clean knife around the edge. Turn upside down on a plate to serve, or just eat it right out of the ramekin.
